Mahmoud, a 35-year-old Syrian man, was crossing the border between Turkey and Bulgaria in mid-December 2023 with his sister, Yasmine. At one point, near the village of Valcha Polyana, they were abandoned by the group they were traveling with. On December 16, 2023, our team in Bulgaria received an alert and immediately began searching the area while also notifying emergency services (112). Unfortunately, no response was received. Requests made to the border police went unanswered. On January 6, Yasmine's body was found and buried in Yambol, but there has been no further news of Mahmoud.
